Art Car Guru Gives Sneak Peek of New Film

Art Car Guru Gives Sneak Peek of New Film in Buffalo Appearance Tonight
Free event shows off art cars, bolsters groundbreaking Art On Wheels project
July 2, 2003

The man whose films on art cars helped inspire this summerís innovative and unique Art On Wheels project will present his works, including a sneak peek of his new in-progress film, in a special free event beginning at 6 p.m. TODAY, July 2 at the Market Arcade Film & Arts Centre in Buffaloís Theatre District.

Harrod Blank, an art car artist and enthusiast whose films ìWild Wheelsî and ìDriving the Dreamî have been shown on PBS and National Geographic Explorer, will show all of his works this evening, including a special rough-cut preview of his new video, ìAutoBiography.î This event, which begins with a reception for Blank at 6 p.m., will help to explain the art car movement and enhance the experience of Art On Wheels, the public arts trail that presents art cars and original sculptures at 57 of the Buffalo Niagara regionís leading attractions.

Blankís videos chronicle the art car phenomenon, its artists and the power of this relatively new folk art movement. After screening his previously released films, Blank will end the night by showing a rough cut of ìAutoBiography,î which he said ìwill give people an in-depth look into the soul of the art car artist and show the diversity of the human spirit in a humorous and uplifting manner.î Blank will introduce each film, and will discuss his new work with the audience after the screening as he works to complete it for release this year.

In addition to the Art On Wheels roving art cars set to be on site, Blank will have his ìCamera Vanî at the screening. This unique van is covered with cameras, including several working video and still cameras used to capture peopleís reactions, which are prominent in Blankís film and book projects. He will then be in Fort Erie to lead an art car rally at this yearís Friendship Festival July 3-6 that will feature Art On Wheels cars.

Art On Wheels is presented by M & T Bank and organized by the Burchfield-Penney Art Center and the Materials Reuse Project in partnership with The Buffalo News. The arts trail will be on display through mid-October. Find out more by visiting www.artonwheels.org.
