Opening Event for Art on Wheels

Dignitaries to Drive Friday's Opening Event for Art on Wheels Project
Area leaders to offer remarks in official unveiling of unique outdoor art trail
May 14, 2003

An impressive roster of area elected and business leaders will fill the dais at the official opening event for Art On Wheels, set for Friday May 16, 2003 at 10 a.m. outside Rockwell Hall at Buffalo State College, 1300 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will move into the theater at Rockwell Hall (new location).
Cindy Abbott-Letro, the project chair for this exciting summer-long outdoor art trail, will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event, which is expected to take approximately 30 minutes. Other speakers that morning will include Dr. Muriel A. Howard, President of Buffalo State College, State Assembly Majority Leader Paul A. Tokasz (D-Cheektowaga), Erie County Executive Joel A. Giambra, Niagara Falls Mayor Irene Elia and Buffalo Mayor Anthony Masiello. All speakers will be available for media interviews following their remarks.

Also on the dais that morning will be several members of the regionís business community and tourism industry. Without the help of those on the dais and others being recognized Friday, the scope of the Art On Wheels project would not have been as inclusive as it is, nor would the impact have been as broad for the Buffalo Niagara region.

With this ceremony, Art On Wheels will officially be under way. This unique outdoor art trail, on display through October, features 57 new works of art, including more than 30 art cars, which are automobiles that have been painted, sculpted onto or enhanced in some way to make them into art. Art On Wheels is completed with original sculptures that have been created from recycled and found materials. Each site is one of the regionís leading cultural, heritage or historic attractions, so that Art On Wheels is about both the art and its location, creating a complete cultural tourism experience for residents and visitors alike.

Art On Wheels is presented by M & T Bank and organized by the Burchfield-Penney Art Center and the Materials Reuse Project in partnership with The Buffalo News. Find out more by visiting us on the web at www.artonwheels.org. You can purchase a passport at all Western New York Wegmans or at selected Art On Wheels sites. It will be the most fun you will have on (or off) four wheels.
