Buffalo Niagara 2003 — Summerlong Sensation

Thanks from Art on Wheels!

A special thank you message from Art On Wheels organizers Burchfield Penney Art Center and the Materials Reuse Project alt

Thank you Buffalo Niagara and all out of town visitors to the Arts Trail for making this a most successful cultural tourism project. We have heard from many of you ñ telling us what a special time you have had searching out the one-of-a-kind works of art and discovering the cultural wealth offered in Buffalo Niagara.

From Fort Niagara at the Northern tip of Niagara County all the way down to Frank Lloyd Wrightís Graycliff in Derby and from across to the Roycroft campus in East Aurora to Buffaloís theatre district and all points in between Art On Wheels offered an adventure of discovery.

Original sculptures and art cars created by artists with ties to the Buffalo Niagara region at were placed at 57 sites of cultural, historical or heritage interest to make up a cultural arts trail. Arts trail adventurers who visited even a portion of the sites had world-class art experiences, rode vintage merry-go-rounds, traveled along the Erie Canal, learned of our regionís prominent part in the history of the automobile ñ all experiences they will cherish and share with others. In addition, 7 roving art cars traveled throughout Western New York making appearances at festivals and special events all summer long.

In a final send off, 45 of the 64 sculptures and art cars were gathered in Bidwell Parkway in the heart of Buffalo for a Wheel-O-Rama celebration! Thousands visited their favorite art car or sculpture one last time perhaps even picking a piece to bid on at the closing auction. The auction ultimately raised $65,000 for the organizers future programming.
